Panos Varangis
Deputy Governor
ATEbank




Since April 2004 Panos Varangis has held the position of Deputy Governor of the Agricultural Bank of Greece (ATEbank). He also serves on the board of directors of ATEbank's mutual fund company, credit card company, and insurance company. Included among his areas of responsibility within ATEbank are the Treasury and Investment banking division, the Corporate and SME departments, and the Arrears division.

Born in Athens in 1958, he is a graduate of the University of Piraeus. Soon thereafter he left for the United States where he earned his Masters Degree in Economics from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. and his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University, New York.

From June 1987 until June 2004 Panos Varangis worked for the World Bank in Washington D.C. in various areas including the Research Department, the Commodities and International Trade division and finally as lead economist in the Agricultural and Rural Development Department. Most of his work focused on the analysis and development of commodity markets and marketing systems, on risk management and on rural credit. His duties at the World Bank included development and oversight of a program for commodity risk management for banks and state and commercial firms in emerging markets.

He has published a large number of papers and articles as chapters in books, in academic and professional journals, and as World Bank Policy & Research Working Papers in various fields of international development and finance.

He is fluent in Greek, English, Spanish and Italian.

He is married to Barbara Lyman and has three children.
