George Alogoskoufis
Minister of Economy and Finance
George Alogoskoufis was born in Athens on October 17, 1955.
He obtained an MSc in Economics in 1978 and a PhD in Economics in 1981 from the London School of Economics. He was a Lecturer and Reader at the University of London from 1984 to 1992 and holds a Chair in Economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business.
He was also a Consultant to the European Commission (1989-1990), to the World Bank (1991-1992) and to other international economic organisations and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Labour Economics of the London School of Economics (1981-82) and at the Centre for Economic Policy Research based in London (1985-2001).
His PhD. thesis was awarded the Sayers Prize of the London University for 1981.
He has written four books and has published over 40 articles in the most prestigious international academic journals. His book "The Drachma: From the Phoenix to the Euro" was awarded the annual Prize of the Academy of Athens in December 2002.
Alogoskoufis was first elected as a State MP to the Greek parliament in the 1996 parliamentary elections and as an MP in the Athens constituency in the 2000 parliamentary elections. Following the victory of New Democracy in the 2004 parliamentary elections, Alogoskoufis became Minister for Economy and Finance in the government of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis on March 10, 2004.
