Professor Plutarchos Sakellaris
Chairman, Council of Economic Advisers
Plutarchos Sakellaris is Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers at the Hellenic Ministry of Economy and Finance and Professor in the Department of Economics of the Athens University of Economics and Business. He is member for Greece at the Economic and Financial Committee of the European Union and serves as Deputy at the Eurogroup and ECOFIN Councils as well as Alternate Governor for Greece at the World Bank. He serves on the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Greece, the Hellenic Public Debt Management Agency, and the Institute for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE).
He taught for eleven years in the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland, USA. He has also taught at the University of Ioannina (Greece), Central European University (Budapest), University of Munich and Yale University. He has presented seminars at numerous Universities and international conferences.
His professional experience has also included:
- Visiting Expert - European Central Bank (ECB) 2001-2003
- Staff Economist and Consultant - Federal Reserve Board, USA 1998-2000
- Research Associate - U.S. Bureau of the Census 1998- 2002
He completed his undergraduate studies at Brandeis University, USA (B.A. 1986) and his doctoral studies at Yale University, USA (Ph.D. 1992).
His research is focused on monetary policy, productivity and sources of growth, firm investment in physical capital, the industrial sector and education. His papers have been published in books and in international journals, such as: American Economic Review, Journal of Monetary Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, International Economic Review, Economic Policy and Oxford Economic Papers.
He was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1964. He is married and has two daughters.
