Dimitrios Caramitsos-Tziras Ambassador of Greece to Japan Hellenic Republic Ambassador Caramitsos-Tziras joined the Greek Diplomatic Service in 1983 and has served in a wide range of posts, as Ambassador in Japan, the United Kingdom, at the United Nations (New York) and in other capacities in the U.S. (Los Angeles), Bulgaria, South Africa, and Canada. He has also held various positions at the Foreign Ministry in Athens, among others, EU Internal Market Director, Counter-terrorism Coordinator and UN Head of Section. - From 2009 to 2014, he served as Ambassador-Deputy Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations in New York - In 2014, he was appointed as the Foreign Ministry’s Director General for EU Affairs. During that time he was also Coordinator of Greece’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, responsible for organising and implementing the six-month programme of meetings of Greece’s presidency. - From 2016 to 2020, he served as Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Concurrently, he was Permanent representative of Greece to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). - In November 2020, he was appointed the Government’s Liaison with the “Greece 2021” National Committee, the official organizer of the celebrations surrounding the landmark anniversary of 200 years since the Greek Revolution of 1821. - Since January 2022, he is Greece’s Ambassador to Japan and works for pursuing closer political and economic ties between Athens and Tokyo. BUSINESS From 2002 to 2004, he worked for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games Organising Committee (ATHOC) as General Manager and member of the Games Operation Committee of the Games. His responsibility was personnel and volunteers’ management in the preparatory phase and during the games’ operation. He also was ATHOC’s foreign relations’ adviser. An active supporter of innovation and business growth, Ambassador Tziras is International Affairs Advisor at Brookstreet Equity Partners LLP, a London-based FCA registered alternative investment fund manager (AIFM) supporting companies in transformational growth. He is also member of the Technology Transfer Committee of the GAPSTI Programme at the University of Cambridge. Previously, he was member of the Advisory Board of the International Diplomatic & Business Exchange in London (2016-2020) and an honorary member of the Board of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF). HONOURS & PERSONAL In 2008 he was appointed by the President of the Hellenic Republic Grand Commander of the Order of the Phoenix. He has also received many distinctions and awards for his commitment to supporting Greek causes and promoting international relations. Since 2020, he is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers of the City of London. He has studied Law & International Law at the Universities of Athens and Thessaloniki. Ηe is married with two daughters.
