Sander Schakelaar graduated as a naval architect, after which he chose to widen his scope with a business administration study. His professional career started at Conoship International as a market researcher. From 1995 to 1999, he was responsible for the marketing and sales of merchant vessels to be built by this shipyard group on, primarily, the German market. His interest in the shipping industry motivated him to move over from building to owning, initially as managing director of a colleague ship-owning company and, since 2000, as one of the two managing owners of the JR Shipping Group. Starting in 2010, the group's activities diversified into the market for service vessels for the offshore wind industry through SeaZip Offshore Service BV. 

His interests exceed the container feeder vessels, multipurpose vessels, and offshore service vessels of the JR Shipping and SeaZip Offshore Service fleet. He is also an active sailor and instructor Yacht Master at sailing school ‘De Zeezeiler’.
