Ken O'Brien

Gemini Shippers Group


Ken serves as the President of Gemini Shippers Group, a leading shippers association in North America which works with over 250 small and medium importers and exporters on freight procurement and international trade issues. Prior to joining Gemini, Ken served as the founding President of bigboxSMALLBOX, an analytics consulting and SaaS firm which merged to form Orion Management Group. Prior to founding bigboxSMALLBOX, Ken spent 21 years in the liner shipping industry with APL and Hapag Lloyd. He held various senior trade management and operating roles including the profit and Loss (P&L) management of all of APL's U.S. touch trades culminating in management of APL's $3 billion transpacific P&L as Senior Vice President of the Transpacific Trade. While at APL, Ken served as a Board member and Executive Committee member of the Transpacific Stabilization Agreement as well as represented APL at numerous discussion agreements including the; WTSA, CADA, WCSADA and AWCSA forums. Ken received his Bachelor of Science degree in Maritime Administration from Texas A&M and received a Master of Science degree in Business Analytics from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Homeland and Cyber security from Farleigh Dickinson University. Ken is the President of the Board of Directors of the NJ-211 Partnership. Ken served as a member of the Federal Maritime Commission - Supply Chain Innovation Team in 2016 and as a member of the Fact Finding 29 Supply Chain Innovation Team in 2020 and was recently appointed to serve as a member of the National Shippers Advisory Committee.
