Jan is the firm's chief economist and head of Global Economics and Markets Research. He is a member of the Firmwide Conduct and Operational Risk Committee and the Global Investment Research Client and Business Standards Committee. Jan joined Goldman Sachs in the Frankfurt office in 1997 and transferred to New York in 1999. He was named managing director in 2004 and partner in 2008. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Jan was a research officer at the London School of Economics.
Jan is the No. 1 ranked economist in the annual Institutional Investor All-America Fixed-Income Research Team, a position he has held for the past six years. He is a twotime winner (2009 and 2011) of the Lawrence R. Klein Award by Blue Chip Economic Indicators, Inc., for the most accurate US economic forecast over the prior
four years, a period including the global financial crisis.
Jan is a member of the economic advisory panels of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Congressional Budget Office.
Jan earned a D.Phil. in Economics from Oxford University, as well as degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
